Project Proposal

For this semesters folio I would like to focus on a theme of JUXTAPOSITION.

The verb juxtapose is defined at meaning to mix, compare, set side-by-side or contrast something/s, two or more themes that oppose one another. As my style as a photographer is still developing I feel this type of theme would be a good way to collaborate plenty of different models/objects/subjects/settings into a short supply of images. I also had thought about this idea when I was doing my visual art major for my high school certificate, but didn't flesh out the concept as I eventually chose another theme over it, so it would be good to bring a vision to life.

Basically what I intend to do is select a model subject and a completely contrasting surrounding, to join forces and create an visual juxtaposition. Some of the themes I've chosen may be seen as irreverent and satirical and perhaps even morbid but I think that is what this theme is about, standing out for whatever reason, even if that reason may be the wrong one. The hardest part of this theme will be deciding on models and other commodities that oppose one another but still remain aesthetically interesting. Although all the images will be completely different, the theme of juxtaposition should run strong throughout the folio and connect all the images together.

I'm interested in making this portfolio 100% portraiture as this is what I'm interested in and pushing towards as a photographer Additional to that, I think people as subjects would be a much more powerful way of conveying this theme as they are pose-able and communicative of expression and emotions. I want to use a fairly even mix of boys and girls as models and do not want to use the same model more than once in any of the images. As the theme is about contrasting, I want to use different looking models (Aka different heights, hair colour, skin colour, features etc) in each of the photos so that none of the images look the same. I also want my portfolio to be gravitated towards high fashion, so the objects will reflect that by wearing high fashion attire in all situations.

Some ideas I've had for models and contrasting surroundings so far are :

* Clown in a psychiatrist/medical waiting office anticipating bad news
* A female in a formal dress in a supermarket aisle
* People having a tea party in a graveyard
* A business man fully suited up in business clothes at the beach in or close to the water
* Someone eating a mass amount of take away at a gym or aerobics session

Above all I want my folio to represent the complete opposite of being mundane. I hope it can put forward the notion of not blending in and becoming part of the scenery. It's about making sure the subject remains seperate and doesn't just bleed into the background. It's about being completely conspicuous and not inconspicuous. It's about standing out, being distinctive and catching the eye, even if it's for all the wrong reasons.
